TIPS & TRICKS

Clinic & OR: FAQ

CLINIC TIP #1

Look up the patient schedule the day before and write down a couple notes about each patient so that you don't get backed up day-of. This will make you appear smooth and efficient! Also be warned: you will probably be pimped on general knowledge involving main conditions or treatments that are brining patients in.

OR TIP #1

Know what procedure(s) are being done ahead of time and know the relevant arteries, nerves, and MSK involved/at-risk. Plastics is one of the only specialties that is literally head-to-toe so anatomy is key and you may be asked about this in the OR.

CLINIC TIP #2

Plastics clinic has many mini procedures that are done in the office and are low-risk and often easy to perform, like steroid injections. Make sure to ask your mentor if they would be willing to walk you through how to do them and if you can perform it if there are any applicable patients.

OR TIP #2

While suturing is important for all surgery specialties, plastic surgeons pride themselves on having the best cosmetic outcomes for closing up surgeries. Make sure to brush up on suturing skills the night before - even 5 minutes goes a long way! Most plastic surgeons are more than willing to let you suture at the end of cases if you can perform interrupted deep dermal knots.
